Airport hotels are generally \u2018have to\u2019 not \u2018want to\u2019 \u2013 places you endure between flights, not destinations you\u2019d actually choose. But there\u2019s one airport hotel in Australia that gleefully defies this logic. Enter the Vibe Hotel Canberra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like something beamed in from a 1960s sci\u2013fi movie directed by someone with excellent taste, this hip, state\u2013of\u2013the\u2013art hotel has serious gram factor. With its curling Guggenheim\u2013esque black\u2013and\u2013white six\u2013storey atrium, gold lounge, and funky Helix Bar, you\u2019d be forgiven for thinking you\u2019ve stumbled into a boutique New York hotel rather than beige, bureaucratic Canberra. Better yet, it\u2019s terrific for families \u2013 you can book adjoining rooms without the usual hotel rigmarole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rooms themselves channel \u201cMad Men\u201d meets a gentleman\u2019s club circa 1962 in the Hamptons. We love it. The bathrooms are so photogenic my wife starts snapping photos like paparazzi at the Oscars, which is saying something given she usually reserves that enthusiasm for sunset and overpriced lattes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That evening we enjoy a cocktail at the Helix Bar \u2013 we order kaffir lime martinis that arrive looking like liquid architecture in a glass. Then we dine in the Vibe\u2019s restaurant, which is perfectly set up for families, thanks to circular booths that create a cosy cocoon (book ahead or suffer the indignity of a regular table). We tuck into a 300gram Riverina Angus striploin that\u2019s charred on the outside and blushing pink within, matched with a local 2023 Nick O\u2019Leary Canberra Shiraz that\u2019s peppery enough to make you sit up straight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The following morning, after one of the best buffet breakfasts I\u2019ve encountered (and I\u2019ve judged many) \u2013 psst! everything was actually hot, a miracle in the buffet world \u2013 we head to our first outing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I normally approach Taronga Zoo with the enthusiasm reserved for root canal work. Why? Because it\u2019s exhausting. All uphill and down dale with little shade, and by day\u2019s end the family resembles extras from a zombie film. So imagine our surprise when we discover the National Zoo and Aquarium is designed by someone who actually likes families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Easy, tree\u2013lined paths provide blessed shade. An aquarium and reptile cave offer air\u2013conditioned respite. Here we meet lions lounging like oversized house cats, tigers pacing with theatrical menace, meerkats doing their trademark sentinel routine, and hand\u2013feed exotic birds and kangaroos that are refreshingly polite about taking food from small fingers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s a massive playground where children can burn off the kind of energy that makes long car trips unbearable, plus a Dinosaur and Megafauna display that proves extinction can be educational and entertaining. The Kids Discovery Trail particularly impressed us \u2013 it transforms the zoo into a treasure hunt, engaging little ones and teaching them to actually find the animals rather than just demand ice cream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Post\u2013menagerie, we head for the multi\u2013award\u2013winning Questacon, which is essentially Canberra\u2019s Disneyland for the scientifically curious. The National Science and Technology Centre boasts more than 200 interactive exhibits related to science and technology, making it a popular destination for school excursions Australia wide \u2013 a reputation that\u2019s entirely deserved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The soundtrack is a symphony of squealing children echoing up the spiral ramp that connects the exhibition spaces. It\u2019s so engaging you\u2019ll struggle to drag the kids away, even with promises of ice cream. Possibly the only place where children voluntarily learn about physics while having the time of their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our last visit is to the War Memorial. One of the convenient things about the Vibe \u2013 and Canberra in general \u2013 is that everything sits within a blissfully traffic\u2013less 10\u2013minute drive. The War Memorial is a perennial favourite, and little boys gravitate to the guns, tanks and planes on display like moths to a flame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are interactive elements \u2013 tunnels to scramble through, a WWII bombing raid simulation that\u2019s impressively loud \u2013 but let\u2019s be honest, it\u2019s more for the dads. While the children press their noses against glass cases, fathers get misty\u2013eyed over Spitfires and read every plaque with the solemnity of visiting scholars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later we find ourselves back at the Helix Bar, champagne and wine in hand, soaking up the vibe of the Vibe. The sleek curves of the atrium catch the afternoon light, and Canberra \u2013 against all expectations \u2013 has delivered. Who knew the nation\u2019s capital could punch this far above it\u2019s weight?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
