Before Aussie tennis legends Ash Barty and Nick Kyrgios came the incredible Evonne Goolagong and for one night in October The Art House stage will transform into a tennis court to tell her story in Sunshine Super Girl<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This biographical portrait of an Indigenous sporting icon is told using a unique blend of theatre and physical movement choreography by Yorta Yorta\/Gunaikurnai theatre maker Andrea James. It follows Evonne\u2019s story from small town tennis club, through discrimination and personal tragedy, to the courts of Wimbledon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sunshine Super Girl<\/em> originally opened in 2020 at Griffith Theatre and since found its\u2019 way on stage through COVID to a limited audiences at Sydney Festival in 2021. The Art House is proud to be part of the 2022 tour to finally bring this incredible part of Australian history to a wider audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSunshine Super Girl<\/em> is not only an important Australian story, but a highly entertaining and innovative piece of theatre in its set, choreography, narration, and clever transformation of space. We are in the business of telling stories and we\u2019re proud to bring Evonne\u2019s tale to audiences in such a captivating way.\u201d says Executive Director, Anne-Marie Heath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the second production to tell a piece of Indigenous sporting history on The Art House stage this year after Black Cockatoo<\/em> by Ensemble Theatre which revealed the often-unknown story of the first international test cricket team of 1868.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sunshine Super Girl<\/em> is about a girl from the bush who dared to dream and continues to this day to inspire and give hope to thousands of young girls across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
