The Walt Disney Company is thrilled to announce the three incredible performers that have been cast in the roles of Gaston, Maurice and Le Fou when Beauty and the Beast<\/em> has its Australian premiere at Sydney\u2019s Capitol Theatre in June 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andy Cook <\/strong>will step into the role of Gaston,<\/strong> Le Fou will be played by Nick Cox<\/strong> and Rodney Dobson<\/strong> will play Belle\u2019s father, Maurice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beauty and the Beast<\/em> will be produced in Australia by The Walt Disney Company and Disney Theatrical Productions, under the supervision of Thomas Schumacher<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hailing from the Northern Beaches of Sydney, Andy <\/strong>originated the role of \u2018Wayne Burns\u2019 in the world premiere of Strictly Ballroom the Musical<\/em> and is currently playing \u2018The Duke\u2019 in Moulin Rouge! The Musical. <\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exciting newcomer Nick Cox<\/strong> will make his professional musical theatre debut as Gaston\u2019s hilarious buddy, Le Fou.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Central Coast resident Rodney<\/strong> is a seasoned performer alsocurrently performing in Moulin Rouge! The Musical<\/em>. His extensive theatre credits include the role of Amos Hart in Chicago<\/em>, Dr Dillamond in Wicked,<\/em> Th\u00e9nardier in Les Mis\u00e9rables<\/em> (25th Anniversary) and many more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andy<\/strong>, Nick<\/strong> and Rodney<\/strong> are all such incredible performers and bring their own vibrant and hilarious energy to these iconic characters. The roles of Lumiere, Cogsworth, Mrs Potts, Babette and Madame will be announced next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About Disney\u2019s Beauty and the Beast<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Based on the 1991 film \u2013 the first animated feature ever nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture – Beauty and the Beast<\/em> opened on Broadway in April 1994 and garnered nine Tony nominations and one win. It played for more than 13 years on Broadway (before closing in 2007) and remains to this day one of the top 10 longest running shows in Broadway history. The 2017 live-action retelling of the animated classic starring Emma Watson quickly became the highest grossing live action film musical of all time, a record beaten only by The Lion King<\/em> live-action release in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The original Australian production of Beauty and the Beast<\/em> opened in Melbourne at the Princess Theatre in 1995 starring Rachel Beck<\/strong> in the role of Belle, Michael Cormick<\/strong> as the Beast, a young Hugh Jackman<\/strong> as Gaston, and the late Bert Newton<\/strong> as Cogsworth. The production played for over two years across Melbourne and Sydney and won the 1996 ARIA Award for Best Australian Soundtrack\/Cast\/Show Release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The structure and tone of the story and score \u2013 as conceived for the 1991 film by its executive producer and lyricist Howard Ashman<\/strong> with a continued evolution for the Broadway adaptation three years later \u2013 made Disney history. Composer Alan Menken<\/strong> and Ashman\u2019s previous film musical The Little Mermaid<\/em> was the only prior Disney film structured like a stage musical where the songs are integral to plot and characterisation rather than only ornamental or digressions. This Menken\/Ashman innovation is credited with the 1990\u2019s Disney animation renaissance that went on to create such film classics as Aladdin, The Lion King<\/em> and Hunchback of Notre Dame<\/em> and helped re-introduce the book musical form to popular culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This new stage production of Beauty<\/em> features lyrics by Tim Rice<\/strong> and a book by Linda Woolverton<\/strong>.  The work retains the lush period sound of the Oscar-winning and Tony\u00ae award nominated score – which brought classics including Be Our Guest<\/em> and Beauty and the Beast<\/em>, as well as Change in Me<\/em>, added to the musical production in 1998 and retained thereafter. New dance arrangements by David Chase<\/strong>, have allowed original choreographer Matt West<\/strong> to re-visit his work, this time as director and choreographer. Longtime Menken collaborators Michael Kosarin<\/strong> and Danny Troob<\/strong> are musical supervisor\/vocal arranger and orchestrator, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Completing the design team, Tony\u00ae award winner John Shivers<\/strong> is sound designer, Darryl Maloney<\/strong> is the video and projections designer, and David H. Lawrence<\/strong> is hair designer. Jim Steinmeyer<\/strong> is the illusions designer, as he was on the original 1994 production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
