Central Coast Council is inviting the community to celebrate NAIDOC Week 2024, at an official flag raising ceremony and breakfast BBQ on Monday morning 8 July 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
NAIDOC Week, held across Australia from 7-14 July, honours the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It provides an opportunity for all Australians to listen, learn, and engage in meaningful dialogue, fostering a society where the wisdom and contributions of Indigenous peoples are fully valued and respected. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Central Coast Council Director Community and Recreation Services, Melanie Smith, said this year’s theme, ‘Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud’, honours the enduring strength and vitality of First Nations cultures\u2013 with fire a symbol of connection to Country, to each other, and to the rich tapestry of traditions that define Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe official flag raising ceremony will be held on Monday, 8 July 2024, at 9:30 am, outside the Council Administration Building, 2 Hely St, Wyong, followed by a breakfast BBQ,\u201d Ms Smith said.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe would love to see community members attend both the flag raising ceremony and the BBQ breakfast, coming together to celebrate the rich history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander peoples during NAIDOC Week 2024.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Council will also be holding additional activities at local libraries, including NAIDOC scratch art at Erina Library and NAIDOC Storytime at Umina Beach Library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
These activities are always a hit during the July School Holidays. This year, we have storytelling sessions, cultural workshops, and interactive experiences that highlight the richness of First Nations heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Council Administrator Rik Hart said Council is dedicated to fostering strong relationships with local First Nations communities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe Central Coast has one of the largest and fastest-growing indigenous communities in Australia, with more than 17,000 residents identifying as Aboriginal and\/or Torres Strait Islander,\u201d Mr Hart said. \u201cNAIDOC Week plays a crucial role in community education and celebration.
