In celebration of International Women’s Day this Saturday 8 March 2025, Central Coast Council is proud to recognise the significant contribution of its female lifeguards, aligning with the global theme of \u2018Accelerate Action.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With 17 female beach safety staff currently rostered out of a total of 92, Central Coast Council has one of the highest representations of female lifeguards in New South Wales. This achievement highlights Council\u2019s commitment to fostering inclusive workplaces and challenging traditional gender roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Central Coast Council Director Community and Recreation Services, Melanie Smith said the female lifeguards are not just breaking down traditional gender barriers, they are actively enhancing the experience for beachgoers across the Coast\u2019s 15 patrolled beaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe’ve observed that many people, especially women and children, feel more comfortable approaching or receiving care from a female lifeguard,\u201d Ms Smith said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis fosters a more inclusive and reassuring environment, which is crucial for effective public safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBeyond this, the team has organically developed a strong mentorship culture. Senior female lifeguards are taking the initiative to guide and support new recruits, demonstrating exceptional leadership and contributing to the team’s overall strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis tangible example of \u2018Accelerate Action\u2019 showcases how a diverse workforce directly strengthens our service delivery, making our beaches safer and more welcoming for locals and visitors to the region.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Central Coast Council Beach Lifeguard, Grace English said that being a lifeguard provides a unique and rewarding experience, directly supporting her professional growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis role has given me the opportunity to learn lifelong transferable skills, from first aid and emergency response to building strong communication and interpersonal skills,\u201d Ms English said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe flexible hours are also fantastic, especially as I\u2019m currently studying. This job allows me to balance my education with meaningful work, directly contributing to my professional development. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a privilege to serve the community in such a beautiful environment, and to be part of a team that supports each other\u2019s growth and advancement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Central Coast Council Mayor, Lawrie McKinna said for nearly 30 years, our community has embraced and supported female beach safety staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis acceptance has allowed us to build a team that not only excels in its purpose but also serves as role models for future generations,\u201d Mayor McKinna said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBy supporting women in these essential roles, we are making our beaches safer and more accessible for everyone.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
