External awnings and blinds are best to keep the sun off windows and doors but must allow for ventilation with the outside of the window or door glazing. If the shading is fitted too closely, air trapped between the shade and window\/door will heat up and conduct heat into the room. This\u00a0can\u00a0be worse than no treatment at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For example, a closed aluminium roller shutter will trap\u00a0air and create much more heat transfer than a pivot\u2013arm or auto\u2013lock arm awning that is angled away from the window. The gap allows\u00a0the prevailing breeze to move warm air away from the window keeping your home cool. Fabric and colour choices also make a difference, for example, light coloured canvas is cooler than darker coloured PVC fabrics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If an external awning isn\u2019t practicable, or you just don\u2019t want one, there are good internal solutions to keep your house cool. Jessica suggests: \u201clighter coloured fabric and layers and thickness are important like dual roller blinds. Curtains and plantation shutters are also very good internal solutions, allowing you to keep windows and doors open to catch the breeze while keeping out the hot sun.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
