Meet the Rare Baby Komodo Dragon at the Australian Reptile Park"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>RARE BABY KOMODO DRAGON HATCHES AT THE AUSTRALIAN REPTILE PARK<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Australian Reptile Park has welcomed a Komodo dragon hatchling following only the third successful Komodo dragon breeding event in Australia<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The hatchling has been named Sunda, after the Lesser Sunda Islands where Komodo dragons still roam today<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sunda is now on display, giving visitors the rare chance to see a baby Komodo dragon in person<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a rare conservation milestone, the Australian Reptile Park has welcomed a tiny Komodo dragon hatchling, marking the third success breeding attempt of species in Australia, with the Park proudly becoming the first zoo in the country to achieve the feat five years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hatchling has been named Sunda&nbsp;<em>(soon-dah),<\/em>&nbsp;after the Lesser Sunda Islands in Indonesia, where Komodo dragons still roam today. After spending&nbsp;<strong>almost eight months inside his egg<\/strong>, Sunda finally hatched this weekend following months of careful monitoring by the dedicated reptile team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The egg was the result of a&nbsp;<strong>rare off-season pairing<\/strong>&nbsp;between Sunda\u2019s parents, Kraken and Daenerys. This weekend, the first tiny slit appeared in the egg, signalling the start of a long and delicate hatching process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<strong>It doesn\u2019t get any more exciting than this,<\/strong>\u201d Mr Gifford said. \u201cI\u2019ve dreamed of seeing a baby Komodo dragon hatch out for my entire life, and it\u2019s better than I could\u2019ve imagined.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The full hatching process took three days from the first slit in the egg to Sunda fully emerging. He then spent another day absorbing the remaining yolk, which provides vital nutrients to help give him the strongest possible start to life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Gifford said watching Sunda work his way out of the egg was unforgettable. \u201cIt was a massive undertaking and the greatest battle of his life,\u201d he said. \u201c<strong>For something so tiny, he showed an incredible amount of strength.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sunda is now healthy, alert and settling into a custom-built enclosure designed especially for a young Komodo dragon. Measuring just 30 centimetres long, the tiny hatchling is already showing all the right behaviours for his age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe has been doing everything we\u2019d expect,\u201d Mr Gifford said. \u201cHe\u2019s been climbing up and spending a lot of time at the top of his new Ficus tree, basking under his heat lamp. He is very happy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While Sunda may be small now,&nbsp;<strong>he is part of the world\u2019s largest lizard species.<\/strong>&nbsp;In time, he could grow to almost three metres in length and weigh up to 90 kilograms, just like his father, Kraken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sunda is now&nbsp;<strong>on display in the Australian Reptile Park\u2019s reptile displays<\/strong>, giving the public an incredibly rare chance to see a baby Komodo dragon in person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>About Komodo Dragons:<\/strong> Komodo dragons are the world&#8217;s largest living lizards, native to a small number of Indonesian islands.
