Celebrating Our Local Heroes: The 2026 Central Coast Australia Day Award Winners

Central Coast Council announced the winners of the 2026 Australia Day Awards last night at Wyong Art House, with the overall Citizen of the Year Award going to Kerry Ann Groves for her outstanding commitment as a volunteer at San Remo Neighbourhood Centre for over 15 years.

The Australia Day Awards were open to applicants from across the Central Coast region, with all nominees having the chance to be named as the prestigious, Central Coast Citizen of the Year.

The individual awards span the following categories: 

1. Community Group Award

2. Community Life Award 

3. Senior Citizen Award 

4. Volunteer Award 

5. Young Person Award

Council Mayor, Lawrie McKinna said these annual awards celebrate and recognise those who enrich and serve the community. 

“It’s a privilege to present these awards to remarkable local individuals and organisations, recognising the invaluable contributions they make to our community and the positive effect they have on many lives,” Mayor McKinna said.

 “My congratulations go to all the 2026 award recipients and nominees. Your tremendous efforts truly embody the generous, caring spirit of the Central Coast – thank you for everything you do.”

Council Acting Director Community and Recreation Services, Brett Sherar said these annual awards shine a light on those making a genuine and lasting impact on the Central Coast region, acknowledging their dedication to creating positive change.

“The nomination process highlights many Central Coast individuals who make great contributions to their community and deserve recognition,” Mr Sherar said.

“The Australia Day Award 2026 category winners who were also commended for their contribution to our community include: Central Coast Local Health District Volunteer Service & Bowerbird Recycling (joint Community Group Award), Clean4Shore (Community Group Award highly commended entry), Jacqui Barton (Community Life Award), Tony Powell (Senior Citizen Award), Antony Harris (Volunteer Award) and James Drover (Young Person Award).”
