Central Coast Council is encouraging the community to take time to check in with friends, family, neighbours and colleagues this R U OK? Day, Thursday 10 September 2026.
R U OK? Day is a national suicide prevention initiative that encourages people to stay connected and start meaningful conversations with those who may be struggling.
The day reminds Australians that a conversation could change a life, and that people do not need to be experts to reach out – they just need to ask, listen and show they care.
Central Coast Mayor, Lawrie McKinna said R U OK? Day is an important reminder that small actions can make a real difference throughout the community.
“Most of us know someone who has gone through a tough time, and sometimes the simplest question can be the start of an important conversation,” Mayor McKinna said.
“R U OK? Day encourages us to trust our instincts, ask the people around us how they are going, and take the time to really listen. That genuine care and connection can help someone feel supported and less alone.”
From Monday 24 August to Sunday 20 September, R U OK? Day banners will be displayed on Brian McGowan Bridge in Gosford and Tuggerah Straight to help raise awareness across the region.
Free R U OK? Day pocketbooks and wristbands will also be available at selected Council facilities, including leisure centres, pools, libraries, the Regional Art Gallery and Laycock Street Theatre.
Council Director Community and Recreation Services, Melanie Smith said Council is proud to support the campaign and help share practical resources with the community.
“By displaying banners and making free resources available at Council facilities, we hope to encourage more people across the Central Coast to start supportive conversations – not just on R U OK? Day, but any day of the year,” Ms Smith said.
