Central Coast audiences are about to get a much closer look at a band that’s just had the whole country watching. Tina Martini, figurehead of David Bowie tribute act Tina Machine, appeared live on Channel 7’s Sunrise this month, chatting to weatherman Sam Mac about how the act began as a solo project and grew into a full band, before playing snippets of “Space Oddity” and “Heroes” to a national audience. The segment was broadcast from Kafe Kooks, a café built around its own tribute to Bowie, complete with memorabilia lining the walls.
Tina Machine formed two years ago and has quickly built a reputation for high-energy, note-perfect tributes spanning every era of Bowie’s career, alongside a celebration of his enduring legacy as a champion of individuality and diversity. The band’s biggest show to date packed out Sydney’s Lansdowne Hotel, falling on the exact tenth anniversary of Bowie’s death. Tina herself has performed as a Bowie tribute act since 2019, including an acclaimed appearance at Let’s Dance Carinda, the annual outback festival held in the tiny New South Wales town where Bowie filmed much of the “Let’s Dance” video clip.
