Families in the north and across the Central Coast will now have an exciting new destination to play, explore and connect. Central Coast Council has completed the regional playspace at the new Lake Munmorah Recreation Precinct that opens to the public on Saturday 26 September. The inclusive modern playspace has been thoughtfully designed to enable children of all ages and abilities to play, explore and connect together, while offering unique experiences for families in a vibrant outdoor setting.
The regional playspace is the first major recreational facility to open as part of the $4.64million Lake Munmorah Recreation Precinct and features an impressive range of innovative playspace features including:
- 30‑metre dual flying fox
- junior and senior multi-level play units
- bouldering climbing element shaped like a Sugar Glider
- junior bouldering climbing unit
- double swing set with a standard seat, toddler seat and an all-ability harness
- multi‑directional bird’s nest swing
- accessible carousel
- accessible rocker
- water play area
- double mouse house
- log balance trail
- softfall surfaces and concrete connected pathways
- open lawn for free play
- supporting infrastructure, sheltered picnic tables and barbecues, seating, water refill station, shared pathways and extensive landscaping.
Central Coast Mayor, Lawrie McKinna said accessibility, inclusion and community feedback had been central to the design of the new regional playspace at the Lake Munmorah Recreation Precinct.
“A key focus of the project has been creating a vibrant playspace that is accessible and inclusive for everyone. Featuring accessible play equipment, pathways and thoughtfully designed spaces, the facility supports children of all ages and abilities to play side by side and share in the experience together,” Mayor McKinna said.
“Our community helped shape the design of this playspace, and we listened. Thanks to the valuable community feedback, the Lake Munmorah Recreation Precinct is becoming a welcoming destination for families, designed to spark fun, imagination and exploration. It’s a space that children dream about and parents love to visit.”
The playspace forms part of Council’s broader vision to create a major recreation hub for the northern Central Coast that supports healthy lifestyles, social connection and community wellbeing.
The playspace is supported by a new access road and carpark with 86 spaces including 6 accessible spaces, providing safe movement through the facility for both drivers and pedestrians.
Construction of the district-level skatepark and pump track will now commence as the next stage of the project, while public toilets have also been brought forward for delivery to support the growing use of the recreation space.
When fully complete, the Lake Munmorah Recreation Precinct will feature a regional playspace, district-level skatepark and pump track, public toilet, park furniture, barbecues, water refill stations, pathways and landscaping, creating a vibrant destination for recreation, connection and community life. Completion is anticipated by the end of 2026.
The $4.641million Lake Munmorah Recreation Precinct is funded with $921,763 by the Australian Government under the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program (for the access road and carparking), and $3,718,237 by Central Coast Council.
