Past The Shallows: A Gripping Australian Drama at The Art House Wyong

by LukeAdmin

Past The Shallows is the latest theatre drama coming to The Art House Wyong.

Two brothers, an abusive father, an unlikely friendship, and the sea. Adapted for the stage from Favel Parrett’s acclaimed Australian novel, Past The Shallows is a heart-wrenching play about family, brotherhood, secrets and lies.

A co-production between Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP) and Archipelago Productions, audiences can expect a tide-turning adolescent drama as brothers Harry and Miles struggle through life with their alcoholic father on the rugged but beautiful coast of south Tasmania.

Still reeling from the tragic deaths of their mother and uncle, and with their eldest brother having just done a runner, Harry and Miles’ lives change forever when family secrets bubble to the surface over the course of a school holiday.

Starring a powerhouse cast of young Aussie talent playing multiple roles, this moody and atmospheric Australian story will keep audiences on the edge of their seats.

Programmed as part of The Art House’s ongoing commitment to providing culture and entertainment for young people, theatre fans and literature lovers of all ages should catch Past The Shallows while they can.

With the source material also a HSC text, families with teens entering their HSC years are especially encouraged to take advantage of this rare opportunity to see a curriculum text go from page to stage.

Past The Shallows is playing in The Art House Studio for one night only from 8PM on Friday November 1st. Tickets are on-sale now.

“Playwright Julian Larnach, in collaboration with Director Ben Winspear, powerfully recreate Parrett’s work as a poetic narrative. One moment the audience is held in thrall as the power of the ocean is described whilst simultaneously tossed into the action adrift on the violent sea, as the actors voice what Parrett initially set down as first-person narration. The effect is nothing short of epic.”

– Stage Whispers

“Past The Shallows plays like an ever-shifting dream…each of the three performers carry the narrative like a relay race, passing it between them as it builds and builds. No one drops the baton. ⭐⭐⭐⭐”
