Celebrating Local Writers: Jonn Christie and Mavis Gunter of Wyong Writers Group

by LukeAdmin

Jonn Christie

Wyong Writers Group member  Jonn loves to write. ‘Writing takes me out of my own head, so I can stop overthinking everything ‘ Jonn says. ‘I was born extremely prematurely at 530 grams, almost 35 years ago now! I decided to start writing poetry about eight years ago, I was going through bad depression from loneliness, since I am not really too confident at speaking to people unfortunately, so I just let my poems do the talking for me’  Jonn adds.

Here is Jonn’s latest poem A Restless Mind.

Sleep does not calm easy to those with a restless mind, a mind that never goes to sleep.
Always worried about what will be when you shut your eyes.
Night is when one and all should be sleeping, not wide awake with the worries of life.

Unlike my dog who always sleeps undisturbed like a fallen tree.

Waiting for moonlight and shadows to pass.

Wishing and waiting for sleep, sleep that never to rest my heavy mind.
Wishing not to be awake until morning light.

Mavis Gunter

Lifetime member of Wyong Writers Group 94 years young Mavis Gunter is a founder member and member for over 50 years. Mavis tells me that she keeps busy these days with knitting and writing. Mavis is unable to physically attend meetings but enthusiastically participates in club writing competitions.

Mavis has published four books of her writings mainly for family and friends and says she gets a lot of joy out of writing

In 2015 Mavis Gunter published “One and One Makes Five”, a book of stories and anecdotes based on the experiences of a family living in a wattle and daub house on a small farm in the bush between the years of 1932 to 1942.

It illustrates the challenges of living without water or electricity and the hardships encountered due to a ten year drought and The Depression. Many animals lived and died during this period and their antics were adored by the five children.

In 2022 Mavis Gunter published a further memoir entitled My life from 10 to 19.

Jonn and Mavis’ pursuit of excellence in writing are an example of being differently able and loving life.
