Get Your Hands Dirty: Join the Massive Free National Tree Day Planting Events Across the Coast

Central Coast Council is inviting the community to get their hands dirty and join one of two events for this year’s National Tree Day from 9am-1pm, Sunday 26 July.

The two community planting events will be held at Killcare Beach, Killcare and Porters Creek, Wyong, giving residents the opportunity to come together and join Australia’s largest community tree planting and care event.

This year’s events will bring a morning of planting, learning and connection, with activities including a Welcome and Acknowledgement of Country, live music, educational workshops and family-friendly activities.

Council Acting Mayor, John Mouland said National Tree Day is a great opportunity for the community to get involved in caring for the Central Coast’s unique natural environment.

“Last year’s National Tree Day events at Killcare Beach and Porters Creek, Wyong saw more than 2,000 plants go into the ground. An incredible effort by our local community,” Acting Mayor Mouland said.

“It’s a simple way to make a big impact. Helping to create healthier ecosystems, protect our coastline and improve water quality for future generations.

“It’s not just about planting trees. These events are about coming together, getting outdoors and having a bit of fun while doing something positive for the place we all love. I encourage everyone to come along, get their hands dirty and take part in the activities.”

At Killcare Beach, volunteers will help stabilise coastal sand dunes by planting native vegetation adapted to harsh coastal conditions, which plays a vital role in protecting the coastline from erosion and storm impacts.

At Porters Creek, planting efforts will support the restoration of an important wetland system that filters stormwater before it reaches Tuggerah Lakes and provides habitat for more than 100 native species.

Council is encouraging people of all ages and abilities to take part, whether they’re seasoned volunteers or trying tree planting for the first time.
