Working from Home: Style and Sanity Tips for the New Normal

Now if Covid hasn’t bought upon us enough challenges add to that the fact that, many have had to adjust to working from home as well. In some cases we know this has given a lot of positives to people; more freedom, less wasted time travelling and the ability to spend more time with family at appropriate hours of the day. However, we have also had many clients express the frustration with: lack of motivation, missing face to face human interaction and feeling uninspired to even “get dressed” in the morning. Often meaning pj’s and “activewear” have been their go-to.

Now this was ok when it was a bit of a novelty but for many it is now the new normal way of work life. Thus leaving many (we have been told) feeling frumpy, unmotivated and lazy!

Below are some ideas Sam shared in our VC Style & Beauty Portal* recently and some extra “tips” she picked up from when she herself worked more from home than her Studio at Erina. We hope they bring some sanity and style to your work and stay at home days!

Shower and make your bed before 11am! In the army it is apparently said that making your bed first when you get out of it sets you up for a productive day as you have already achieved something! Plus I found once it got to lunchtime it was harder to get motivated as in my mind half the day was almost done so why bother (bad I know).

Apply a little bit of makeup  Even if only tinted suncream and lippy, you will feel better every time you pass the bathroom mirror! It also means you are ready to face anyone who may come to the door (like the delivery people with all your online orders!) or for that unexpected zoom meeting.

Wear your best colours  No matter what you wear make sure the colour(s) flatters you! Even your pj’s!! You will feel more energised and look more radiant.

Invest in stylish and comfy attire and footwear  The first thing I realised when COVID lockdowns hit was I had very little casual wear as I had been investing in my work or dressy weekend wardrobe the past few years. So I invested in some “stylish” relaxed pants, knitwear and sneakers in Winter and some linen drawstring waist pants, “on trend” graphic tees and fashion slides for Spring. That way I always had something that felt fresh, modern and fit well.

Dress down your ‘good’ clothes  If you have read my book “Stylish, Sexy and Sane…in 30days!” you will know I am a great advocate for “recycling” my “good” clothes one season and making them my “everyday” pieces the next season. Therefore, if you have “good” pants or a “good” dress that you use to wear to work or events, and if you were invited to somewhere tomorrow you would probably want to buy something new then…wear it now!

Style Ideas For “Dressing Down” Your “Good” Pieces:  Team your “good” items back with sneakers or add a tee under a strappy dress to make it more casual. Wear a linen shirt with a pair of dressy pants and for an added relaxed feel wear them with a slide or flat sandal. Opt for accessories in more natural, casual fibres like; wood, hessian, raffia and cane rather than sparkly jewellery and glitzy accessories – unless of course they make you feel fabulous!

Create A Routine  Especially if you have other people at home with you, set aside your “work hours” and let everyone know that you won’t be available unless it is absolutely essential. This way when you finish your work you can be completely present for everyone. It also means that you can be focused on your work when you need to be and you won’t feel that you are working constantly day and night.

Designate A Workspace  Doing this will seperate your personal space from your work space allowing you to switch off when you aren’t working. Make this space an area that makes you feel good when you enter it. Maybe place some fresh flowers from your garden in a vase or have some essential oils burning so you can associate this scent and visual aspect with “feel good” emotions and not negative ones.

Change It Up!  Take advantage of this freedom of not having to be rigid in the hours you work. Maybe go for a walk in the middle of the day and do more work after dinner when everyone else may be in bed or watching tv. Taking control of when and how you work will not only be liberating it can also feel very empowering!

Join An Online Group  If you are missing human interaction why not join a group of like minded people to break the monotony of only doing work when at your computer. We started a fabulous VC Style & Beauty Portal* during COVID for our clients and anyone who wanted to be inspired, informed and motivated with all things fashion, beauty and lifestyle. You can learn more about it here www.patreon.com/vibrantconcepts. We would love to have you join us and you can unsubscribe no questions asked at anytime.

Until next time, stay stylish and sane!
